Train to Grand Central
After a great night's rest, we ready for our big adventure into the big apple. The train from Millford is only a 10-minute drive, and the awaiting trail ride will have us in Grand Central in about an hour and a half. As the day is simply gorgeous, we find several other Connecticut residents sharing our idea! It is a busy Saturday into the city!
The ride is smooth and on time and the main station lives up to images from many movies we've seen. This is Celeste's first trip to Manhattan (well, except for our little drive through on Thursday) and she has her camera very ready. My lone trip was well over 20 years ago, so it may as well be my first also. The first time in Grand Central - wow!! Doreen has several visits under her belt, but it's been a good five years for her, as well. We are ready for this adventure.
We step out onto 42nd Street and head for Bryant Park, how many summer concerts have we witnessed on Good Morning America here? We grab a couple of beverages en route and sit in the park for a bit, a welcome respite from the hustle of the streets. The bustle increases as we head into Time Square, just around the corner. This beautiful sunny weekend day is alive with folks, everyone enjoying the magnificent weather. Broadway show marquees are ablaze, the New Year Ball quite visible and the Tickets line is long! Welcome to the hub!
Just around the corner, we catch a glimpse of Radio City and the famed Rockefeller Plaza, where we find the rink gone and activity underway for setting up outdoor venues for summer, a cafe and oyster bar almost ready. The flags are flapping in the cool breeze and the NBC studios stare down upon us. We have walked right into our morning television sets. What fun!
As we head toward 5th Avenue, the crowds lessen just a touch. The shoppers are definitely out along this route, and all of the high end stores beckon. We catch a glimpse of Gucci, Bendels, Bergdorf Goodman's and Saks. Window shopping is all we indulge in for ourselves, however. And, that is just as much fun, honestly. Watching the young fashion trends on the street is an education and the stroll proves quite entertaining, to say the least.
Along this route, we take a peek into St. Patrick's beautiful cathedral, just as busy as the shops today. An interesting contrast. Celeste lights a candle for her Dad, and we all take a short moment for reflection at this stop. It's a lovely place indeed.
After the brief rest, we head on. Central Park is our next destination!!!!
